Derita Bench Installation!
True believers! We finally have an install date for the Derita Bench. Please watch this video for a recap of the project:
We will be out there Friday July 28th, 8:30am - 11:00am overseeing install from CATS. It will be across the street from Derita Presbyterian Church. Thank you to Christopher Lange and Nicholas Modrak for finally getting us over this hump and getting this installed.
If you’d like to come out and take pictures of the ribbon cutting, we’ll be out there from 8:30 to 11:00 am. While there, you’ll be able to make your digital snowflake to add to the Derita is Cool Mural. See you then.

Snowflake Making -
Open Studio 11am - 2pm July 22nd
Speaking of Snowflake making, please come by the Studio this Saturday July 22nd if you’d like to make your digital or paper snowflake and see it laser cut into a template for the wall. All supplies provided.
Artist Selected for Derita is Cool Mural
Deborean Halsey, who hails from Gibbon Woods, has been selected as the local artist tasked with incorporating the elements of Derita into the letters “D,E,R,I,T,A”.
from Deborean - “I am a visual artist born and raised here in Charlotte. I specialize in portraits & landscapes. Currently dabbling into abstract and hopes of doing murals in the very near future. I am skilled at using a wide range of mediums from graphite, charcoal, oil paint, pastels and acrylic’s.”
He will work with Matthew Scott Honeycutt for composition and Arko for mentorship on creating his first Mural.
The team will occupy the Gibbon Studio as the design HQ for the duration of the project. We will collect snowflakes and memories from the community and put them together here.
Studio Space Officially for Rent!
Speaking of the Gibbon Studio, the 2 rental offices I have been building out are officially for rent.
Gibbon Studio
Gibbon Studio - Named after Gibbon Road, this 11’x12’ studio has a large window wall letting in natural light. This Studio is reserved for the artists working on the ‘Derita is Cool’ Mural until November(?).
Ribbon Studio
Ribbon Studio - Named after Ribbon Walk Nature Preserve, this 11’ x 12’ studio has 4 solid walls designed to be a blank slate to make your own.
The rental rate starts at $400 but can be discounted if you contribute your talents to a workshop during your 1-6 month stay. Apply Here
Birdhouse Workshop
Making Houses
Last month we had our first woodworking workshop. This time we made simple birdhouses. Participants leanred to use the miter saw, drill press, bandsaw, sander, and power drill to create a lovely habitat for their feathered friends.
A good time was had by all.
Parti Party - Interstitial Space
Fun Times
Last Friday Night we a great time last night at our 2nd Parti Party 🎉. Lots of theory and ideas bouncing around and activating the space. We discussed using highway offramps as sites for building new things, like ‘fountains of youth’ or museums. Thanks to all who came. Can't wait for the next one :).
