Derita Mural Heats Up

After 2 months of searching and negotiation, the Derita is Cool mural has found a new home. Thank You to Phil Harris, a Derita native, art enthusiast, photographer, and property owner for allowing us to adorn and honor the Derita Volunteer Fire Tower with our Placemaking Grant Mural.

We will be working with local artists over the winter to finalize design and install in 2024. Stay tuned for updates. As always, feel free to submit your snowflake or make one in person at Derita Design

Design Intent:

The Derita Volunteer Fire Station Tower, a towering symbol of Derita's rich history, is undergoing a transformative artistic journey. Our mission is twofold: to honor its legacy and raise it to new heights. The mural, born from a spark, now boasts over 100 unique snowflakes, each representing a collective promise to our vibrant community. Our commitment ensures that each snowflake finds its place in a tapestry of unity adorning the tower, reflecting the diverse perspectives converging to form a breathtaking whole.

Within the tower's 'cube,' a blank canvas awaits transformation as distinctive snowflakes emerge, paying tribute to the individuals breathing life into our community. The strategic location of the tower provides the perfect canvas for iconic 'Derita' signage, rising above the Tire Shop and asserting itself as a striking presence on the 'art plaza' flank. Adorned with backgrounds inspired by community insights, each sign is brought to life by local artists, fostering a deep connection between the artwork and the community it represents.

This mural, alongside the Derita Dairy Bar mural, lays the foundation for a vibrant public plaza, a cherished gathering place for the community with the potential for additional seating. More than a visual statement, the mural is a resounding proclamation of our unwavering dedication to Derita—a living testament to the enduring spirit of community and togetherness, embracing growth, change, and the prospect of a commuter train in our ever-evolving cityscape.

Derita Design hits 1000!

Thank you to all the believers in the mission to make Derita a Design Destination. We have been building this vision for 3 years on Gibbon Rd. It has been a blessed and measured build and have met so many creative minds that wouldn’t have been possible without this space.

As always, we are excited to continue meeting our neighbors and encouraging creativity and agency through learning and making.

Designers Parti!

We had our 4th edition of Parti Party where we watched Graphic Means. This documentary was amazing. It went through the history and development of the methods to which we have been communicating graphically for centuries.

We watched and sketched our thoughts about the movie. We then presented our ideas and had conversation about the broader implications of the advancement of technology, in particular AI.

We ended the night with a sit at the fire.

Thanks everyone for coming!
