March Recap
Events:
Sew Social
Kicking off the Month, Sew Social, organized by Sophia Ege, held their 2nd monthly workshop here in Derita. This workshop was about making sewing covers for their sewing machines. It was a great atmosphere of sharing techniques and ideas.
Poly-Pot Workshop + Open Studio
Derita Design held our 3rd Workshop of the year teaching folks about making a ‘Poly-Pot’. This is a container made from Plastics destined for the landfill (grocery bags, bottles and lids). It is a pretty simple workshop taking melted plastic and putting it in a modular mold to form a unique pot. This was held concurrently with our monthly Open House.
It was great meeting a few new neighbors and showing the creativity that can exist in upcycling materials. See you next time!
CraftFest
The day after the workshop, I set up camp at Petty Theives Brewing, the site of the 2nd annual CraftFest put on by WeCraftCLT. It was an amazing atmosphere where every booth had such great handmade creations. I was selling the Poly-Pots (some I made the day before!) There was woodworking, felting, crocheting, lasercutting booths. As well as workshops throughout the 2 day event. If you like crafts, please come out next year for this event!
News:
CLTisCreative HUG Grant
Thank you for your continued support CLTisCreative! Derita Design has received a $250 grant to purchase books for our Derita Design Library. This will be enough for around 10 quality design books. We strive to provide a space for learning about all types of design and sometimes the best way to do it is to have the literature from the masters. I can’t wait to bring even more quality works to this space.
City of Charlotte Placemaking Grant
Together with Community Leader Theresa McDonald and Derita native artist Matthew Honeycutt.
From the Application:
We are creating a public mural on the side of the Zippy Ice Building.
Zippy Ice was founded in 2007 as a woman owned business. The theme of the mural is ‘Derita is Cool’. This is a double entendre, as this is on a successful Ice Storage company building, that serves Derita and beyond with its Ice, but also underscores the efforts of Derita News and Derita Design in promoting the lovely neighborhood of Derita as an up-and-coming neighborhood with tons of energy waiting to be tapped into. This mural will not only contain imagery relating specifically to the history and people of Derita but will also involve any and every citizen in Derita as they will design their own snowflake that will be included on the mural.
