Derita Sign Coming Soon!

Final Concepts

It has been quite a ride since this project kicked off in March of last year. Originally meant to be a Mural on the side of an ice storage building, we had to pivot the idea to the old Derita Volunteer Fire Department Tower.

The goal for February was to digitize and fabricate the snowflakes collected from the community over the months. Each snowflake took about 20 minutes to cut on the CNC. Each one will be suspended in the air to spin in the wind once installed. I am excited to see the finished product!

The artist Debo Da Vinci finished one of the 2 signs lettering. He has been tasked with painting the names of 54 area that make up Derita.

These will form a tapestry behind the ‘Derita’ word with a font chosen by Derita native and property owner Phil Harris. He has said it reminded him of the font used when he went to school in the neighborhood.

Remaining is the horizontal sign which will include adjectives about Derita that were collected in community meetings. Derita is a special place and it will be nice to have that affirmed to those passing by and those who live in the area.

Installation is scheduled to take place from March 23rd to 25th by Rob Housmann and Co, he is experienced Art Installer.

Stay Tuned to for celebration plans!

Thank You to all of you and the Derita and Charlotte community for your input and effort in making this happen.
